Since environmental aspects are inextricably linked with modem golfing spirit, it might appear contradictory to build a golf course in the middle of the Moroccan desert, especially in a country where water is a rare and precious commodity. This called for an ecological approach and forced an adjustment of our old western habits.
Designed to adapt to the constraints of its environment, Samanah is a desert golf course: it was a deliberate choice to leave certain parts of the course with a desert-like feel, decorated with cacti. For the other plants, species that consume very little water were chosen. A pumping station installed on an artificial lake covering a surface area of 3.7 hectares is used to water the golf course.
In addition to a high-performance system, the course is equipped with a quality drainage network to help control water consumption.
The fact Samanah is a desert golf course does not affect the quality of the game. The grass planted on the tees, fairways and greens had to comply with very strict requirements: underneath the Spanish grass on the fairways and on the rough lies a layer of sand 20 cm deep. Under the greens, peat from Ireland and sand from France as is the USGA standard. Nicklaus Design® accept only the very best.
